In this lecture, first we give an introduction to symmetric spaces (without manifold structure). As applications, we will describe some constructions of Einstein and Ricci soliton solvmanifolds. We also mention some relations between nice solvmanifolds and nice submanifolds in some noncompact symmetric spaces.
